The Swedish Coffee Culture: trends, preferences, and sustainability

By Malin Nordblom

Coffee is something a big part of the population is craving for and feeling passionate about. Swedes are drinking a lot of coffee, they are actually on the Top 10 list of the world´s biggest coffee drinkers (6th place 2021). Many Swedes are drinking a big cup of black coffee, not to confuse with it´s American counterpart that is less strong.

The coffee is often topped with some plantbased milk like Oat Milk, Pea Milk or Soy Milk that is a more allergen-friendly, protein-rich and also a dairy free alternative. As for example the Pea Milk has an lower environmental impact that is also a more and more popular alternative. Today there is also a bigger demand for caffeine free coffee and also Fairtrade coffee from smaller producers, many people are looking at how the coffee is produced and prefer to buy coffee that is clearly stating how and where the coffee originates from. However the trend when people are brewing coffee after weighing the freshly grinded coffee powder so that they have the correct amount of coffee for the ultimate coffee experience might not be a big trend, but still a trend.

But Sweden is still a country where most people are brewing their coffee on a traditional coffee brewer even if drip coffee, Bialetti and cold brew are trendy among many. But as long the Swede get their coffee they are happy!
