The world of trade show events is facing a crucial challenge: combining the large turnout and complex logistics of major international trade shows with a more sustainable approach. Recent research shows that 73 percent of exhibitors and visitors believe it is important for an event to show a concrete commitment to sustainability, and more than a third would not attend an event that does not adopt responsible policies.

This is why Fiera Milano has set clear goals, reducing its environmental impact and promoting social initiatives, such as by joining the international Net Zero Carbon Events initiative, which aims to halve greenhouse gas emissions from international events by 2030.

In particular, Fiera Milano uses 33 percent energy from renewable sources, while a new photovoltaic system with a capacity of 8.2 MWp will cover 20 percent of the events’ energy needs. Another cornerstone is sustainable mobility, with charging points for electric vehicles and the adoption of hybrid vehicles. The goal? To reduce the impact of transportation during exhibitions and encourage greener solutions for exhibitors and visitors. Another highlight is waste management. 86 percent of the carpets used during events are recovered and the use of environmentally friendly materials is encouraged, including through initiatives to raise awareness among exhibitors.

And sustainability is not only environmental, but also social. In terms of equal opportunity, 43 percent of Fiera Milano employees are women, while in the area of community support, partnerships such as the one with Banco Alimentare have been activated.
