Country Focus: this time we analyze the hospitality market of the two Alpine countries. Growth prospects for imports are good in all segments, from catering to furniture to coffee, with a prevalence of the high and medium-high end.
Austria and Switzerland, respectively 17th and 18th in the world in Professional Catering, are two countries with excellent dynamism.
Austria, with an import of 696 million in 2020, in the last decade recorded an average annual + 6.1%, with high potential for the premium-price: over 80% of imports are in fact attributable to the High and Medium-High price. The prospects for 2024 are favorable, with expected increases in catering imports of 6.3% on average per year in euro values (corresponding to 194 million euro). Italy is in 4th place for imports, with 56.3 million euros exported in 2020 and a share of 7.9%.
In the Furniture & Table sector, 2020 marked 2.2 billion euros in imports (14th place worldwide by value) covered for 60% by the premium-price. An average annual growth of + 5.1% is expected by 2024, with increases of 474 million euros; Italy is the 3rd importing country, with 112 million euros in 2020 behind Germany.
With 415 million euros in 2020 in the Coffee-Coffee Machines-Vending Machine, Austria is the 9th world importer with the premium range at 36% of total imports; by 2024 an average annual increase of + 7.2% is expected; Italy is in 3rd place with 80.2 million euros exported in 2020 and a 20% share.
97% premium imports and an all-time high value of 48 million euros in the Bakery & Pastry sector; in the scenario to 2024, an average annual increase of + 7.3% is expected; Italy is in 4th place for imports, with a share of 6.1% in 2020 (2.5 million euros), far from the leaders Hungary and Germany.
In the packaged ice cream segment, the Austrian market, 13th in the world for 2020 import value (73 million euros), expects to 2024 imports of packaged ice cream at an annual average of + 2.6% (+7.9 million euros); Italy, with 5.2 million euros exported, is in 2020 the 3rd importer.
Switzerland in 2020 reached an all-time high for imports in Professional Catering: 692 million euros, premium-price for the 88%; the prospects in the scenario to 2024 appear favorable, with expected increases of + 5.2% annual average in the values in euro (corresponding to 154 million euro); Italy, preceded by Germany and China, is the 3rd importer with 83.5 million euros exported in 2020 and a share of 12.8%.
In the Furniture & Table sector, the Swiss market is in 9th place worldwide with a 2020 import of 2.7 billion euros, 74% attributable to the High and Medium-High segments; for 2024 an average annual growth of + 3.9% in euro is expected, with increases in imports of 450 million euro; Italy, with 343 million euros exported in 2020, is in 2nd place, behind the leader Germany.
With the record of 252 million euros in 2020, the Coffee-Coffee Machines-Vending Machine sector is in 17th place in the ranking of world importers: the premium-price segments exceed 50% of the total. An average annual increase of + 6.3% (+ € 70 million) is expected by 2024. Italy is the 2nd importer behind Germany, with 61.7 million euros exported in 2020 and a share of 24.9%.
Bakery & Pastry (29th in global imports at 22 million euros) see the top brackets at 92% even if a modest increase is expected by 2024 (+ 1.8% per year); Italy is second behind Germany, with a share of 22% (4.8 million euros).
If in packaged ice cream the Swiss market is in 20th place worldwide (59.4 million euros with 95% premium and favorable prospects for 2024, with increases of + 5.6% on average per year and Italy in 4th place with 7.1 million euros exported behind Germany, France and Holland) the most popular are the refrigerated display cases (11th place worldwide) with 102 million euros and constantly positive dynamics: the premium ranges cover 91% of the total imported and forecasts 2024 see increases of + 5.2% on average per year (+22.7 million euros); Italy is in 1st place with 29.6 million euros exported in 2020 (29.3% share) ahead of Austria.
