The value of trade between the USA and Italy

Coffee-making machinery, pasta and bread: the success of iconic products made in Italy is a driving force behind exports of food equipment to the United States.

There is a continuous, uninterrupted trade flow between Italy and the USA.

Confirmation of the relevance of the US market comes from ExportPlanning data for 2021: trade between Italy and the States in the food equipment products displayed at HostMilano amounted to 556 million euros, of which some 546 million was generated by exports from Italy. It is expected that by 2025 exports will reach 711 million euros (CAGR: +6.8%).

Particularly interesting are figures for food equipment products that recorded the greatest increases, providing an indication of market trends.

Among the various sectors, the leading position is held by Professional Foodservice, which last year stood at over 256 million euros, but which is expected to grow to 324 million by 2025 (CAGR: +6%). In this sector it is important to comsider that Chinese products are keen competitors and hold a market share of 69.2%.

One of the biggest selling product areas is refrigeration equipment, which totalled 96.9 million euros in 2021, a figure that is expected to rise to 161.4 million by 2025, followed by kitchen cooking receptacles, electrical ovens and hobs.

There were good results also in Coffee-making Equipment and Vending Machines, a dynamic sector in which Italy holds a market share of 7%, with 79 million euros in exports to the USA (8.5% of world sales to USA) and 115 million forecast for 2025 (CAGR +9.9%). Italy, which is the fifth largest market behind Canada, China, Switzerland and Germany, achieved this result thanks to the coffee-making machinery segment (quasi 77 million euros exported in 2021, a figure expected to rise to 112 million euros in 2025).

Bread and Pastry-making Machinery leads the way on the US market with 78 million euros and a market share of 26.5%, which should rise by 2025 to 28.4%, or 100 million euros by value (CAGR: +6.7%). The largest segment for Italian exports here is bread-making machinery, with 44.4 million euros in 2021. Pastry-making machinery contributes another 33.2 million euros to the total.

Ever attentive to the main business areas around the world, HostMilano constantly monitors this most important of markets, with a busy programme of activities aimed at promoting trade with Italy and supporting businesses operating in professional hospitality and foodservice. These events, held both in person and online, will as always be of great use to operators planning to attend the leading out-of-home fair, which will be held at fieramilano from 13 to 17 October 2023.
