A greener approach to coffee in the future

From machinery to packaging, from capsules to production, more and more companies are focusing on environmental sustainability as an indispensible asset for their operations and products.

Consume less, consume better, reduce your impact on the environment. But have we learned the lesson? There is no doubt that leading firms are now taking a greener approach. And that is something Andrea Clerici, group commercial director of the Cimbali group can vouch for. “In 2022 our focus will be on environmental sustainability. HostMilano was a perfect opportunity to present our Sustainability Manifesto, which summarises the main schemes we are working on: from worker health and safety and our commitment to diversity and inclusivity to the use of recyclable materials, the application of technologies for energy saving, an efficiency drive on production processes, and even collaboration with other concerns in order to achieve shared aims.”

On the innovation front Cimbali has ushered in “a new era of espresso coffee machines that revolutionise the way in which the world’s most popular beverage is prepared, at the bar but also in commercial settings where coffee is not the core business”.

Depending on the target, the new machines focus on high-quality materials with innovative technologies, like the BDS system and Turbomilk, on a professional service that is quick and easy to use (so suitable for small businesses, restaurants and offices), and on a connected super-automatic system that gives an excellent fresh coffee thanks to dual grinding, in different portions, hot or cold, in order to achieve the best result in the cup.

HostMilano “gave everyone the chance to get off to a fresh start. It was a unique opportunity to get an even better idea of the new demands of a changing market that is better informed and takes a more responsible approach.”

“2022 will see a consolidation of the trends that have emerged in recent years in the world of coffee packaging: recyclability and compostability,” explains Elena Demo, coffee product manager at Goglio. The deadlines set by the European Directives and an attention to the circular economy have led to a demand for materials that can readily be recycled, especially mono-materials, with big developments being seen in both lamination and in the design of packaging lines to ensure their suitability of use together with new-generation materials.”

Goglio offers the market new mono-polyethylene and mono-polypropylene products that allow coffee to be packaged in “ready-to-recycle” containers, assuring that sector requirements on barrier provision and manufacturing efficiency are complied with. But also materials and degassing valves certified “OK Compost Industrial”, along with a range of capsules and materials as top lid barriers that are certified “OK Compost Industrial” and “OK Biobased”, along with the brand-new degassing valves “thanks to which ground coffee can be packaged straight after roasting, the result being the production of coffee of a higher quality in a way that reduces the times and costs needed for coffee degassing before traditional capsule packaging.”
