From the Internet of Things to automation, to smart coffee grinders that adapt to different types of extraction, technology is the great enabler of new consumption habits.
Coffee is experiencing momentous changes – from climate change to price tensions to disruptions in logistics chains – but both coffee lovers and coffee professionals can count on a valuable ally: technology.
Not coincidentally, the global coffee machines market keeps growing: according to data from Grand View Research, it was worth $6.64 billion in 2023 and will grow at a compound annual rate of 4.7 percent to $9.26 billion in 2030.
However, what innovations are driving this evolution? They include AI-based processes to support customization, technologies that save water, energy and resources with a view to sustainability, and an increasing use of remote data for consistent and uniform quality. Here’s what some of the industry leaders, who will be featured in the Bars-Coffee Machines-Vending area at Host 2025, have to say about it.
“An increasing attention to environmental impacts is driving the evaluation of more sustainable processes, while the demand requires to maintain high quality standards and competition from new players is increasing,” stated Roberto Gregis, Marketing Manager at Carimali. “In this context, automatic machines with IoT systems improve efficiency and coffee quality, while also coping with the issue of finding and training specialized staff.”
Changes in consumption habits are also impacting important accessories, such as coffee grinders, as Cosimo Libardo, Head of Sales & Marketing at Ceado, explained: “Coffee is evolving from a beverage to a versatile ingredient, and cold-brew consumption is increasing. There is a trend toward coffee grinders suitable to different uses of ground coffee, from espresso to alternative extractions, or methods that require cold coffee as an ingredient.”
“Beverage customization, sustainability, and sensory experience – these are the main trends influencing extraction methodologies and machine functionality, leading to more versatile and user-friendly solutions. Each cup must contain the barista’s ‘signature’, and we aim at this thanks to our technologies, especially flow profiling,” concluded Giovanni Giaquinta, Marketing Director at Dalla Corte.
To find out how these trends translate into technologies and business opportunities, the place to be is Host 2025, at fieramilano in Milan-Rho from 17 to 21 October 2025: not only in the exhibition layout, but also in the events, where the World Barista Championship finally returns to Milan.
