In the past few years there has a been a huge trend towards Japanese desserts in Canada. This has continued over the past year as various Taiyaki ice cream joints have opened up in Canada. Taiyaki is a Japanese fish-shaped cake which was commonly filled with red bean. The latest trend however is to eat them with ice cream including flavours such as black sesame, matcha or nutella.

Some of the more popular Taiyaki joints that I noticed in Toronto is Sukio desserts and Taiyaki NYC – Toronto. Tayiaki NYC – Toronto opened about a year ago. The popular New York ice cream joint has been a hit with the very cute and instrammable icream cones.They are commonly shaped like bunnies and unicorns (like the pic below)
Some of the more recently added flavours include Hōjicha(roasted Japanese green team) and mango (vegan and tastes similar to a sorbet).
Considering how unique and delicious Taiyaki ice cream along with it being very instagrammable, I am sure its only a matter of time before this becomes a hit in other places around the world including Europe
