The talk will explore how the Italian approach to the design of tourist accommodation facilities can be combined with the needs of a "new hospitality" and a "new tourism" in a national and international scenario.
Testimonials will be presented that can describe the new scenario in which the Italian approach to design, which in recent years has found increasing recognition and affirmation, can continue to remain an important reference for the quality of choices at the various scales (from architecture to interior design, up to communication and experience design).
Architect, Phd in Interior Architecture, Francesco Scullica is associate professor in Industrial Design at the Design Department at the Politecnico di Milano and he’s the scientific director of Master Interior Design (Politecnico di Milano) and co-director of Executive Management Design Master for Innovative Environments (Politecnico di Milano and Tongji University of Shanghai). He graduated at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on the Design of the microenvironment and the Design for Users with disabilities; by 1990 he began working at the courses of Interior Design and Furniture held by Prof. Arch. Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, at the Politecnico di Milano, paying particular attention to interior design, product design of furniture and design in general. In particular in relation to its educational cooperation is reminiscent of the tutoring activities carried out on projects in relation to major Italian companies (“Bernini”, “Cassina”, “Fiat Auto”, “Goldeneye”, “Techno” and “Zambon”). Following his collaboration with the Design Studio architect. Bruno Morassutti he worked on an individual research that led to the publication of the text: “Bruno Morassutti, quattro realizzazioni un percorso metodologico” published by Franco Angeli in 1999. He has participated and participates in international seminars and activities as “Visiting Professor” at some foreign universities, including the School of Architecture of Barcelona (SP), De Montfort University in Leicester (UK), the ‘Institut d’Art Visuel of Orleans (F), the Fachhochschule fur Gestaltung Schwabish Gmund (DE), TEI (Technological Educational Insitution) of Athens, the HEAD of Geneve, the RTU- (Riga Technical University) of Riga- Latvia, the Latvian Academy of Art and Design (Riga- Lativa) the RISEBA- School of architecture and design (Riga- Latvia); the Tongji University of Shanghai (China). Regarding the field of international relations since 2002 he is the Promoter for the Faculty of Design for Mobility within the Socrates-Erasmus European Union programme, and from 2004 to 2008, he has been member of the Scientific Committee of the international conference “Designing Designers” promoted by the Faculty of Design and COSMIT, and organized at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile - Milan Fair. Since his Ph.D in Interior Architecture and Furniture, he started to carry out a research on the tourism / hospitality and design of Hospitality. In particular, carrying on the research in this activity, he promoted in July 2000, with A. Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, M. Piva and G. Simonelli, H & C Design, Hotel & Contract Design, the Observatory Scientific on Hospitality. On the hospitality industry, therefore, he organizes and coordinates training courses and workshops on specific project, participate in jury awards for the design contract, in meetings, conventions and exhibitions at trade fairs, drawing up specific publications on these topics. As for his teaching activities, from academic 2000-2001 he teaches at the Faculty/School of Design of Politenico di Milano. Since 2003 to 2012 he has been a member of the Board for the Ph.D programme in Interior and Exhibition Design at the Politecnico di Milano and, since 2018, he’s member of the board for the Ph.d programme in Design at the Design Department- Politecnico di Milano. In 2018 and 2019 he has been Italian Design Ambassador in Riga (Lativa) in the frame of the Italian design Day in the world.
