The European Pizza Championship, the event that gathers together pizza chefs from all over Europe every two years, returns to Host for a two-day event dedicated to the most popular, most eaten and most interpreted Italian dish in the world.
The 2019 edition of the European Pizza Championship of the international trade fair HostMilano will be held on 21 and 22 October. The event, organised in collaboration with the magazine Pizza e Pasta Italiana - the leading magazine in the pizza and professional cooking sector - is one of the unmissable appointments for pizza makers and pizza-lovers throughout Europe, who meet up during the Milan exhibition held at the Rho trade fair area. In the previous 2017 edition, pizza chefs from Italy, France, Hungary, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland took over the dedicated pizza area with a competition that saw Gianluca Concu (Pizzeria Firmino in Cavaglia’, Vercelli) become the winner among the 59 competitors. In the meanwhile, pizza and pizza makers have obtained important international recognition - such as recognition as intangible cultural heritage of humanity for the art of the Neapolitan “Pizzaiuolo” by UNESCO - yet more added value for one of Made in Italy’s symbols.
With such an introduction, the 2019 edition of the European Pizza Championship promises to make sparks... will Italian pizza makers be able to confirm expectations, or will they have to hand over their crown to their European cousins across the Alps or another European country?
While it is, in fact, true that Neapolitan pizza is a symbol of Italy's culinary identity, more and more overseas pizza makers - and not necessarily of Italian origin - are showing skill and ability worthy of the best chefs, with high-level gourmet combinations that are a far cry from the classical stereotypes of pizza with ketchup or mayonnaise.
This competition, which is held live, will have a selected jury of experts who will be given the difficult task of judging the pizzas offered, following the criteria of taste, presentation, matching of taste, cooking and competitors’ skill.
